dark chocolate icecream

in the summer when i’m craving ice cream, we will for the most part head to captain sundae — they’re local and have the best soft serve.  but, during the winter season when captain sundae is closed, we have to head into downtown holland.

well when it comes to anything chocolate, the darker and richer the better. so, ben and jerry’s usually wins out — they have several great flavors!  but, cold stone creamery introduced a peppermint dark chocolate flavor this season!  oh my!  this is some tasty icecream — their after dinner mint combination is fantabulous.  in fact, i have made it a point to let the managers know that keeping dark chocolate would be a good idea!  lol!

why dark chocolate icecream now?  last night on his way home from a youth concert, ty made a stop and brought home a treat.  you guessed it, cold stone!  peppermint dark chocolate icecream, oreos, marshmallow cream, and mini-chocolate chips.  what else could a girl want to eat while scrapping? :)  it was delicious!

a big sigh…

yesterday i went grocery shopping–not the smartest idea, but a necessary one.   the saturday before christmas and a big storm supposedly on the way, tend to bring everyone, and i mean everyone to the store!  but, with a lot of patience, smiles, and “excuse mes” as well as a willingness to stand in line, it really wasn’t too bad!  ok, i have to admit it; i did role my eyes a couple times.  i just don’t understand why an entire family must go grocery shopping!  mom and dad, plus numerous kids all standing in the middle of the aisle, discussing what to purchase.  granted, i don’t have children of my own so i can’t relate, but it really added to the congestion in the already near impassable aisles.

but, it really has been a nice weekend.  yesterday i had time to bake an apple pie [note to self:  when a pie recipe says "quick & easy",  proceed with caution! (it didn't set up at all)],  i prepared food ahead of time for today’s christmas dinner, and made two batches of fudge.  yes, two batches — one with walnuts for me and one without nuts for ty! we decided to have our big ham and cheesy potato dinner this afternoon.  christmas morning/day we will have breakfast casserole and homemade cinnamon rolls :)

i’ve enjoyed some time to scrap as well.  last night i designed my layout for our engagement, december 17, 2005!  i’m getting caught up…very slowly!  i hope to get a lot done this vacation.  that means i’ll need to get some pictures printed.   i’m particulary enjoying my sunday evening :)  my school bag full of papers to grade can remain upstairs;  i’ll work at a coffee shop later in my vacation.  for now…a few days to relax, read, scrap, play games with ty, and eat! lol!

which reminds me, i said i was going to get back in the routine of going to the gym — starting over break :)

vacation can not come soon enough

i gave out four detentions this afternoon :(   i realize that i only have 1 1/2 more days until break, but this week has already taken forever!  and the kids…yikes!  i’m working them hard to keep them occupied and at least somewhat subdued, but my strategy is not working for a few.

i’m way past ready for christmas vacation.  i’ve hardly even thought about gifts for our family members.  ty’s been taking care of it…an internet christmas is on the way for our families :)  no great creative shopping trip and gifts this year!

ok, enough griping.  back to my work…

i can see!

i am absolutely loving my new contacts!  why didn’t i try these years ago?  i love the fact that i can see — all the time!  the first prescription was just ok for distance, and i couldn’t read, use the computer, or grade papers…nothing close up.  (the eye doctor said i was too young to be having these issues!) when i went in for my check-up, a very patient and kind technician sat with me and played around with different powers.  my quick 15 minute check turned into a 45 min + appointment!  i do not have mono-vision contacts, but the balance that finally worked for me is on that order.  i rely on my left eye more heavily for close-up work, and my right eye for distance.  the left eye is still powered for distance, but at a lower power.  make sense?   they are working out so well, that i forget they are in!  for the first time in five + years, i need to go purchase sunglasses for myself! hmmm, i’m afraid that is going to be a difficult decision…

“there’s no crying over books”

although i have had little spare time in the last couple months, i have managed to read a quite a few books.  i  love to read at night.   sometimes i only read a page before i fall asleep, but i have found it helps me keep my sanity and gets my “to do” list off my mind :)  i think i there are four books on the nightstand that i have started (fiction and non-fiction!)

i have discovered a new author (well, at least to me).  lynn austin has written a number of books, but i just recently was introduced to her writing.   her chronicles of the kings  series was recommended to me a while back, but i had not pursued that recommendation.  i sure wish i would have!  that series is next on my list! because, i am really enjoying her refiner’s fire  series which is set in the time period of the civil war.  it is powerful historical fiction with a christian message.   what i appreciate in her characters and the storyline is that religion is not forced nor contrived.   too many christian historical fiction books have become predictable, and well, quite frankly, cheesy.  austin’s characters have depth to them, the story line is complex and historically accurate, and i have not found them to be predictable.   she also has a couple novels that appear to stand alone;  i really enjoyed a proper pursuit.  an unconventional female character always holds my attention, and this was no disappointment.  set in chicago, during the 1893 world’s fair, it peaked my interest immediately.  i loved how she wove a mystery through the storyline as well.  i found myself getting quite attached to austin’s characters, and i must admit…i shed a few tears.  it’s been a long time since i have read books that made me cry.

deanne gist is another author i stumbled upon.  her book a bride most begruding about the jamestown tobacco wives was a storyline i couldn’t pass up.  this story tugged at my heart like no other book has done in a very, very long time.  i became quite attached to the main character.  there were several nights when i fell asleep with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.  yes, this is an indication of a great book for me!  i look forward to reading more of her work.

well, back to the realities of school.  my computer bag is overflowing; heavy enough for me to consider switching to a bag with wheels!  of course, i am still trying to catch up from the insanity of my life during the play.  ’cause much more interesting projects are awaiting my attention — decorating the house for christmas, making our christmas cards, scrapping, lots more books to read.  but, responsibilities win out…at least for a little while.

a snow day tomorrow would be lovely!  i won’t get my hopes up, though.
